What are the most unhealthy cooking methods?
You have to think about the deep frying method. It’s true that fried foods give us more calories and fat, but there are more harmful risks associated with other cooking methods which was highlighted by nutritionist Lovneet Batra in an Instagram post. He revealed the cooking methods you should avoid and why.
Here are 5 cooking methods to avoid:
1. Air fry
Problem:Air-frying, hailed as a healthier alternative to deep frying, promises crispy delights without the excessive oil content. However, behind this seemingly guilt-free cooking method lurks a hidden threat: trans fats. Unlike traditional deep frying, air fryers use circulating hot air to cook food, providing a similar texture with less oil. However, the use of certain oils can lead to the production of trans fats, which pose a greater risk to our health. Also, air circulation can cause uneven cooking, leading to undercooked or overcooked portions.
Solution: Use those oils to coat your foods that don’t produce trans fats. Keep checking the food in the air fryer at regular intervals and stir as needed for even cooking. And of course, use your air fryer in moderation.
2. Grilling
Problem:Grilling can be a flavorful way to cook food. We all love the hint of smoke that comes with our meals. Grilled chicken, grilled paneer and grilled fish are some of our favorite snacks. But grilling at high temperatures and over an open flame can lead to the formation of potentially harmful compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These compounds have been linked to some serious diseases.
Solution:To prevent risks, it is advisable to practice moderation. Use pre-marinated lean cuts of meat. Also, follow proper grilling techniques such as preheating the grates and turning the food frequently to reduce charring.
3. Cooking in non-stick pans
Problem: Non-stick pans have conquered all the cuisines of the world. They are comfortable to use and allow us to enjoy healthy meals with less oil. But nonstick pans often have a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating, commonly known as Teflon. Overheating these pans or using metal utensils on them can cause them to release toxic fumes and particles.
Solution: To avoid the release of toxic substances, do not heat non-stick pans to excessively high temperatures. It’s also a good idea to use utensils designed specifically for nonstick cookware.

Apart from these, there are also other cooking methods which are not particularly healthy. These are:
4. Microwave:
Problem: Address potential microwave concerns, such as loss of nutrients, uneven heating, and potential exposure to harmful chemicals from certain containers.
Solution: Offer tips for safe microwave use, including using microwave-safe containers, covering food to retain moisture, and avoid overheating.
5. Overcooked:
Problem: Highlights the negative effects of overcooking food, such as loss of nutrients, diminished flavor and potential buildup of harmful substances.
Solution: Encourage proper cooking times and temperatures, using timers, monitoring food as it cooks, and opting for cooking methods that retain nutrients.
As cooking enthusiasts, it is natural to explore various cooking methods to unleash our culinary creativity. However, it is essential to approach certain techniques with caution to safeguard our health. By being aware of the potential risks and implementing the solutions provided, we can continue to enjoy delicious meals while prioritizing our well-being.
