Taking a cue, we decided to seek expert opinions to understand if sunbathing has direct benefits for faster shredding.
What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D has many roles in the body, including the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and regulating the immune system. It can also help increase testosterone production and insulin sensitivity. Most people are deficient in vitamin D and can benefit from supplementation, said Varun Rattan, a certified nutritionist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Agreeing, Dr Girish Parmar, Senior Consultant (Endocrinology) at Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mumbai, said maintaining adequate vitamin D levels it is important for overall health. But in terms of faster destruction, such as in the loss of body fat while maintaining muscle mass, there’s no strong evidence of its link to vitamin D, said Dr. Parmar.
Some studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation can reduce body weight and reduce the risk of obesity. This could be because vitamin D helps regulate hormones that affect weight, Rattan said. That said, don’t get too carried away with one vitamin. Think of nutrients like instruments in an orchestra. Each plays a unique role. When they work together in harmony, they create a beautiful symphony.
While several studies are underway to explore the potential link between low vitamin D levels and obesity, the available data is purely observational, and fluctuations in vitamin D levels aren’t directly responsible for weight fluctuations, said Dr. Parmar.
A 2014 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that while vitamin D supplementation did not lead to weight loss in overweight adults, it did enhance the benefits of a low-calorie diet. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2015 also found similar results.
Although vitamin D may have potential benefits for weight management and muscle function, its direct impact on fat destruction or loss is not well established. Vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of obesity and difficulty losing weight. However, it is important to note that correlation does not necessarily imply causation. There is no evidence that low vitamin D levels contribute to weight gain or whether obesity leads to lower vitamin D levels due to factors such as reduced sun exposure or impaired metabolism, said Dr. Manoj Vithlani, Senior Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at HCG Hospitals Ahmedabad. .
So, according to Dr. Parmar, vitamin D cannot be considered a weight loss supplement.
Rattan warned against obsessing over one particular vitamin. He eats more nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains, rather than obsessing over one particular vitamin. Also, be more physically active and getting enough sleep can also help you lose fat, she said.
Dr. Parmar said a healthy, balanced diet and regular physical activity remain the most effective strategies for losing weight. If you’re considering vitamin D supplements, it’s ideal to talk to your endocrinologist or nutritionist since excessive vitamin D intake can also lead to adverse effects, he said.
