Until this week, my only knowledge of the association between vibrations and fitness came from old cartoons. Watch them long enough and you’ll soon see someone rocking their butt or belly with a vibrating machine attached a cloth belt over it. (You know the ones.) They had to somehow vibrate your fat away what a ridiculous idea! Only now TikTok has taken possession of it, and they are spreading it again.
You can now buy cheap vibrating or oscillating plates on Amazon, and that’s what most TikTokers seem to use, although some film their clips on commercial machines like This, which you can ask your gym to purchase for the low price of $7,996. In clip after clip, a mostly young woman stands on the platter, her thighs vibrating wildly, as she tells you about how she burns fat and helps lymphatic drainage, and she’s on day 15 and she can’t be sure but thinks she might be working.
Here are some vibration plates you can buy from Amazon, if you want to try your hand at TikTok jigglefluencing (but please don’t):
- This plays music and has acupuncture magnets underfoot, for some reason.
- This it’s fancier, with handles and a control panel like a treadmill, and appears to have a cup holder conveniently at knee height (?!).
- This It’s one of the cheapest I’ve ever found, and hey, it’s red.
What people who make vibration platforms say
According to TikTok, Vibration plates can change your life in just 10-15 minutes a day. Affirmations are pretty much anything you can imagine — they detox you, burn fat, tone your muscles, and more. If it’s positive, or could be considered positive, someone is saying that vibratory plates can do it.
Amazon’s descriptions devices are a grab bag to match. An example: Fitness Platform Lymphatic Drainage Machine for Weight Loss Shaping Toning Wellness Home Gym Workout. Lots of these cars lists they claim that using them for 10 minutes burns 400 calories and is somewhat equal to an hour of jogging or 30 minutes of yoga. (What do they mean by equal to it is never explained.)
TikTokers are usually standing on the plates and telling you it is how i lost 20 pounds in a month without going to the gym o say use them when you want the runners legs but refuse to run unless you are in danger.
What Vibration Plates Actually Do
It is strange to see vibrations being advertised as healthy, because negative effects of vibrations are known, for example, bus drivers being subjected to whole body vibrations through the bus seats can end up with back pain or, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionpotentially equal cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, nervous, and urological disorders. The occasional ten minutes use probably won’t cause such problems, but some TikTokers use the machines for an hour or more.
There is some evidence that vibration may help bone density in postmenopausal women, although the authors of this review say the evidence is strong only for machines that deliver more than 30 vibrations per second, emMost Amazon machines don’t vibrate that fast. This isn’t one of TikToker’s most common claims, but it’s a perk that might be worth considering.
Strength studies it generally compares performing exercises on a vibration plate to performing the same exercises without vibration. Not surprisingly, there is usually no difference between the two; it’s the exercises that make you stronger, not the vibration. He claims that the vibrating plates, forcing muscles to contract thirty to fifty times a second, as one video said, doesn’t seem to be supported by evidence.
And what about weight loss? This 2019 review reveals that many studies have found no difference between participants who used and did not use a treadmill, but some studies have found a small difference in weight loss. Sounds promising, but people often did exercises on the plate (not just standing on it) and the difference in weight loss between the two groups was often too small to be significant, even if it counted as a detectable difference.
Bottom line, there doesn’t seem to be any support for the claims that standing over a platter for 15 minutes will burn calories or melt fat, much less detoxify you. Then stand on your swing platform if you like, but don’t expect it to a lot for you.
